Catoctin High Students Win in
Statewide SkillsUSA Competition

In statewide SkillsUSA competition, twenty-eight Frederick County Public
Schools’ Career and Technology Center (CTC) students earned first-place
gold medals in twelve competitions, some of which required teams. They
qualify to represent Maryland in National SkillsUSA Championships on
June 19-23 in Louisville, Kentucky. There they will compete against the best
students from every state and territory in the United States.

The winners from Catoctin High School were: Jade Lopez in broadcast
news production, and Tyler Sumner in welding fabrication

In broadcast news production, students work in teams of four; two as
news anchors, one as technical director, and one as floor director. They have
two hours to write and produce their rundown before they produce and
complete a three-minute newscast, as if it were live. They are evaluated on
broadcast writing, voice quality, diction, timing, and performance techniques.

In the welding fabrication contest, competitors in teams of three
demonstrate skills in gas metal, flux cored, shielded metal, and gas tungsten
arc welding. All their drawings, welding symbols, and terms must conform to
the latest edition of the American Welding Society standards.

The CTC encourages community members interested in helping fund
the gold medal winning students’ travel to national competition to contact
