                                                                                       History of Blue Ridge Summit Topic

                                                                                       of Speaker Series


                                                                                          A brief history of Blue Ridge Summit and the local region will be the topic
                                                                                       of the next speaker series event at the Fort Ritchie Community Center in
                                                                                       Cascade. Bill Stanley will share his knowledge and passion for the local area
                                                                                       on Thursday, July 19, 2018.
                                                                                          The local region has featured prominently in the lives of several notable
                                                                                       Americans, including Dr. Walter Reed, Gen. Robert E. Lee, and the Duchess
                                                                                       of Windsor, Wallis Simpson. Some merely passed through; others stayed.
                                                                                       Walter Reed, the namesake of the Walter Reed Military Medical Center,
                                                                                       owned a home in Cascade. Stories about these folks and others will be part
                                                                                       of the presentation. Stanley is a native of Blue Ridge Summit and describes
                                                                                       his interest in local history as a life-long pursuit. He retired as Senior Reactor
                                                                                       Engineer at Three Mile Island in 2016.
                                                                                          The Fort Ritchie Community Center is a 501c3 non-profit agency.
                                                                                       The Community Center provides a wide variety of services to the region,
                                                                                       including youth programs, senior citizen activities, and community events.
                                                                                       Memberships to the Community Center include access to a fitness center, two
                                                                                       gymnasiums, free wi-fi, a weight room, lockers, and discounted group fitness
                                                                                       classes (view the advertisement on page 8).
                                                                                          The event starts at 6:00 p.m., with a social hour followed by the
                                                                                       presentation and concludes with a question and answer segment. Light
                                                                                       refreshments will be provided. Tickets are $15.00 per person and $25.00
