Thurmont Middle School Spirit Show Heritage Day Art Contest Awarded
Choir HCWHA Grant

Last year, the Emmitsburg Community Heritage Day Art contest awarded
nine talented school-aged children with more than $1,900 dollars in prizes.
“We wanted to continue it,” said Jennifer Joy, contest coordinator, “so we
applied for a grant from the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area (HCWHA)
to help promote the contest to Frederick, Carroll , and Adams Counties (PA).”
She continued, “the HCWHA board agreed it was a great idea, and I am
happy to announce that they awarded us a grant!”
Not only did they receive a grant but donations in support of the contest
have already been received from the Tommy West Memorial Fund; Francis X.
Elder American Legion Squad, 121; Sons of the American Legion, Post 121;
and the American Legion Auxiliary 121, and it is hoped even more will be
raised to meet the prize awards of last year. “Although it isn’t guaranteed, it is
the aim to raise last year’s amount.”
The art contest is open to all school-aged children (Grade 1 through
Grade 12) in public schools, private schools, or homeschooling situations.
Participants are encouraged to research the theme “Civil War Retreat through
Emmitsburg” and come up with an original drawing or painting to depict
their impressions of that theme.
